About Mequon, WI

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. In early 19th century, the Potawatomi lived west of the Milwaukee River and had a village in present-day Thiensville located on Pigeon Creek, north of Freistadt Road. The Menominee lived in the area between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan. The Menominee surrendered their part of the land to the United States Federal Government in 1831 through the Treaty of Washington. The Potawatomi surrendered their land in 1833 through the Treaty of Chicago, which required them to leave the area by 1838.
