East Sparta was originally called Sparta, and under the latter name was laid out in 1815, and named after the ancient city of Sparta, in Greece. On June 3, 2015 East Sparta's 70-year-old water tower was dismantled. On July 28, 2017 East Sparta's Towne Pump Tavern built in 1909 burned down.
