Sassafras Sassafras is a 13-year-old leopard Appaloosa mare standing at 15.1 hands and built like a tank!! Sassafras is the true “all-around” horse! Sassafras came from a ranch in Texas, where she was used for many years by an elderly gentleman out on a ranch. Whatever the job was, she was up for it! Checking fences, helping with brandings, dragging cows to the fire, or helping out on long cattle drives. Since she came here, she has been used extensively as a kids’ trail and lesson horse! She takes care of the littlest of kiddos with grace and care but can also be very versatile and athletic—enough to take more advanced and competitive riders to the next level! We have used her here to push cows and do little sortings, and she is extremely athletic and quick when asked for it! She would also be an amazing playday or gymkhana horse. Sass is splendid to ride out on the trails and excels no matter where you take her. She loves to swim and will cross rivers or puddles. She doesn’t hesitate at bridges and is not scared of traffic, semis, crowds, etc! She has been around all wildlife and farm life as well. With all of her versatility also comes some English training! She has the start of collection and a frame up and has done some cavaletti and cross-rail work as well! She makes a very cute English horse and could go far as a hunter jumper or fox hunter. One of Sass’s favorite activities is packing into the mountains! She is extremely surefooted and LOVES the job. She will find the trails herself, be careful on steep terrain, and listen to cues. Sass gets along with other mares and geldings, is easy for the Vet, stands tied all day, loads like a dream, and loves baths. Come check out this beautiful mare.

About Fort Collins, CO

Fort Collins was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army in 1864. It succeeded a previous encampment, known as Camp Collins, on the Cache La Poudre River, near what is known today as Laporte. Camp Collins was erected during the Indian wars of the mid-1860s to protect the Overland mail route that had been recently relocated through the region. Travelers crossing the county on the Overland Trail would camp there, but a flood destroyed the camp in June 1864. Afterward, the commander of the fort wrote to the commandant of Fort Laramie in southeast Wyoming, Colonel William O.
